Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at counselling?

Counselling is a way for you to explore your feelings and emotions in a safe and confidential environment. Counselling can help you examine your options and the possible consequences of any actions.

Can I change to a different counsellor?

We do our best to match you with a counsellor to ensure your needs are met. If the fit isn’t quite right, we can match you with another counsellor to better suit your needs.

If you haven’t tried counselling before, feel free to make an appointment without feeling like you have to keep seeing the person you had your appointment with. It’s okay to try a number of different sessions with different counsellors until you feel you have found someone you can work with.

How many sessions can I have?

Your workplace will have prescribed the number of sessions you can have with us free of charge. If you would like to find out how many sessions you are entitled to, please call us on 6223 5612.

Do I need to tell my employer that I am accessing EAP counselling?

You can access EAP counselling without informing your employer.

Do I have to access EAP counselling?

Accessing EAP counselling is completely your decision. Although a supervisor may recommend an employee access EAP, it is entirely voluntary whether the employee chooses to access the service.

When should I access EAP support?

EAP counselling is brief support and it is encouraged that support is accessed at early distress before an issue becomes a major issue. EAP can be used as that impartial ear to unload any issues that maybe concerning you.

Do I need to have a mental health issue to access the EAP support?

No. EAP support can be used for a wide range of concerns and issues and you do not have to have a mental health issue to access EAP support.

What can I use EAP Counselling/Support for?

EAP Counselling can be used for both work and personal issues. Some examples include, stress at work, work life balance, bullying and harassment, relationship issues, anxiety, financial stress, supporting others with mental health issues.

Can my family access the EAP support?

This depends on the agreement that Positive Solutions has with your employer. To see whether this is possible please contact us.

Is EAP confidential?

Yes, EAP counselling is confidential and your workplace will not know, unless:

  • We are required by law to disclose information. This is normally where there maybe harm to yourself and/or others.
  • You have consented for us to release information.

Non-identifying feedback may be provided to the employer for reporting.

What if I need more support?

On average most people come for less than 6 sessions but sometimes people will need further support that falls outside the scope of the EAP support. In these circumstances your counsellor will discuss with you being able to access our private counselling, including access to our registered psychologist for Mental Health Care Plans or an external referral to a specialised service. If you are covered by Private Health you maybe able to receive rebates for private counselling, please check with your own fund.

What if I don’t think my counsellor is assisting me?

If you do not think that you are making progress with your counsellor and would like to see a different counsellor please contact our Client Services Team to arrange this. We are here to assist you and want to be able to provide you with the best outcome. We appreciate any feedback to ensure continuous improvement. Please see our feedback and complaints page for more information.

Fact or Fiction

Myth 1: Employee Assistance Programs are only for work-related issues.

Myth 2: My employer will be informed that I am accessing EAP.

False! Any service you engage with at Positive Solutions is 100% confidential. We only share information with your employer where we are required to do so by law or where you have consented for us to do so.

Myth 3: I will be charged for accessing services through the EAP.

False! Your workplace will cover the costs of the services that you access through the EAP*. This also applies to any services accessed by family members. The billing is anonymous so your workplace will not know who has accessed the EAP.
*Your costs are only covered for a limited number or types of sessions. This will vary depending on your workplace.

Myth 4: I have to speak to my manager/supervisor about accessing EAP services.

False! Your manager/supervisor does not have to know that you are accessing EAP services. Your EAP provider should be advertised throughout your workplace (lunchroom, office, restrooms, noticeboard, employment contract, etc.). Once you know who your EAP provider is, you can contact them directly.

Myth 5: I have to use all of my employee assistance program sessions.

False! You do not have to use all your sessions through your employee assistance program. If you get everything you need from one counselling session, you do not need to re-book!

Myth 6: I am not paying for the service so I don’t get to pick my practitioner.

False! If the sessions are not working for you, you can request to see another practitioner.

Myth 7: I must have a mental health illness to access EAP support.

False! EAP support can be used for a wide range of concerns and issues and you do not have to have a mental health issue to access EAP support. Due to the brief nature of EAP support is encouraged that the support is accessed early where you may be experiencing early distress.
